Distinguishing Between Hemorrhoids and Anal Fissures
Although hemorrhoids and anal fissures are two different conditions, they are commonly mistaken as the same condition due to their similarities of symptoms and treatments. Hemorrhoids occur when the veins in the anal region become enlarged or swollen. An anal fissure, on the other hand, is a small tear in the anal lining, this is also known as the anoderm. Although hemorrhoids can lead to tears in the anoderm, tears in the anoderm do not need to be present in order for one to be diagnosed with hemorrhoids, whereas in an anal fissure, an actual tear needs to be present.
Symptoms
Typical symptoms for both hemorrhoids and anal fissures include itching in and around the anus, bleeding from the anus, the excretion of pus and severe pain while using the bathroom. Commonly, hemorrhoids and anal fissures are caused by a handful of different factors, including delaying/postponing going to the bathroom. By delaying a bowel movement the stool stays in longer in the rectum resulting in it becoming harder and drier, this in turn makes it more difficult to pass. When finally the hard and dry stool exits the body, it can damage the veins in the rectum and around the anus and also damage the anal lining. Hemorrhoids or anal fissures can develop from sitting on the toilet longer than necessary. This prolonged seating position puts extra pressure on the anus, increasing the likelihood of tearing the anal lining.
Causes
Hemorrhoids and anal fissures are also more likely to develop if one maintains a diet full of stool-hardening foods such as dairy produce, white carbohydrates and even some fruits. In order to fight this, one’s diet needs to include foods that are high in fiber. Fibrous foods such as whole wheat and bran help facilitate smoother and more regular bowel movements. One must also increase the intake of water that will also help to prevent hemorrhoids and anal fissures.
People are also more prone to developing hemorrhoids or anal fissures during certain times in life such as pregnancy and old age. Women who are pregnant carry more weight within their uterus and that adds more pressure on the anal lining. At times, the anal lining may develop inflamed veins or even tear due to this increased pressure. As for men and women who are 60 or older, their anal lining can become weaker and thinner due to age, making it more susceptible to tearing.
Treatment
As for the treatment of hemorrhoids and anal fissures, there are both medicinal and natural methods. Medicinal options usually include over-the-counter suppositories and emollients that can help soothe the pain and the swelling. For more natural methods, one can take regular baths in a salt solution and wipe the affected area with witch hazel in order to facilitate the healing. For more severe cases of hemorrhoids or anal fissures however, one should consult a doctor to get an accurate diagnosis and obtain more effective treatment.
