Globally nature is being dangerously impacted by man-made emissions, spillage and effluent, two of the most obvious effects being climate change and acid rain. If only we could exist without harming mankind’s home, the beautiful green planet, Earth. How wonderful it would be if we could breathe clean air in our towns, uncontaminated by poisons and toxins resulting from our way of living. However, this is no longer possible; we humans have made certain that with the pollution we’ve created we’ll be breathing in airborne poisons, which can impair our habitat and ultimately our health.

We humans are unable to avoid the fallout from the terrible effect that pollution, such as oil and chemical spills, is having on our oceans and all its inhabitants. Lots of fishing jobs that were centered on the healthy bounty of the sea have been eradicated. Fishing has been the basic means for providing for the dinner table and the well-being of so many communities for so long, that it almost seems unthinkable that today we are observing its demise. An illustration of how we have ruined the ocean is with oil spills, a recent example of this is the Deepwater Horizon spill which left many people jobless and cost billions of dollars to put right. A huge amount of wildlife died in that episode, not just fish but birds as well, impacting the whole eco system which can cause no end of problems in the food chain. All as a result of humans and their desire for oil, with almost no thought, except in hindsight, for Mother Earth and her many other children.

Incredible sums are spent on oil exploration when the money could be invested investing in alternative green energy methods or research into green energy. Existing green energy options, which do no damage to the environment, are capable of providing a lot of our energy needs. Provided that the sun shines, solar panels, by way of example, can heat water and provide electricity as well. And something that’s just as simple in concept, wind turbines, uses another free resource (wind) to make energy. So long as the wind blows – and many turbines work efficiently at minimal wind speeds – a wind turbine will work, which is a neat advantage. The time to implement an assertive green energy program is now, given the environmental damage caused by oil, and the limited supply thereof. If we did that, global warming and also the other ruinous consequences of pollution could perhaps be stopped, and just possibly reversed.

The immediate beneficiaries would be ourselves, and naturally our descendants in the longer term. We don’t want our children to grow up in a world that has erratic weather and horrendous conditions; we want them to grow up in a beautiful world where they can be proud of the planet and all it has to offer. Beginning to live green, in addition to taking good care of the environment, will be the only way we can ensure this.

It will be an enormous and rewarding achievement to restrict the harm to our home, planet earth, and it’s environment, but it will take time, much money and plenty of work.
