In the garden, fruit trees can be an attractive feature and there is always the prospect of gathering fruit in season. Over the spring, the bare branches of the winter develop into magical sticks that flourish and become filled with delicious fruits later on.

The genuine wonders of the trees is that you are not going to need magic tricks and incantations to keep them healthy. Maintaining the trees in good shape is because of a few simple processes that anyone can do.

Starting From the Autumn to the Spring

Protect the trees, especially the young ones by installing a net around their base. This particular treatment prevents rats and rabbits from harming the tree. These hungry creatures frequently try to feed from the tree during the winter, as their usual daily supply of food is often limited during winter.

Paint the tree trunk. For those who have a garden somewhere it snows often in the winter, paint the tree close to its base with a latex white paint. Combine it with water (equal portions) to prevent the burns from the sun. Because the sun is reflected by the compacted snow during the winter, this can often cause great damage to the tree. Throughout the night, the chilly air will encompass the trunk and it will often crack it. This can be a dangerous situation, as those cracks are perfect places for insects that can eat your tree alive.

As winter turns to spring, you can do a bit of pruning preferably on a calm day when the air temperature is at least 4 deg C. Garden shears may be used to give the tree a nice form but make sure to keep the crown of the tree free from growth and to give horizontal branches 10-15 cms space all round.

Always remove the sick and dead branches and remember to try and make a clean cut. Trim the shoots immediately after they are formed. The limbs that grow out horizontally must be left uncut as you will be looking for these to bear fruit. Use special devices to check the heights of the trees and then cut the vertical branches to have the same length as the horizontal ones. This will ensure the maximum yield of fruit.

Make sure to irrigate all the trees. If you’d like healthy plant life, you must water the trees to ensure that they grow strong and can withstand the harmful insects and the diseases, particularly when the buds start to grow. Watering will ensure that you will have plenty of fruit to pick in the autumn.

Employ supports to steer the branches to make sure they grow straight. The branches that expand horizontally need to receive the most light, since they will produce more fruits this way. If you want to increase the efficiency of the trees, you can spread them manually using the special devices or by linking them one to another using ropes. Having said that, it is wise to let the tree to grow on its own until the age of four.

Pollination is the most important part of the growing process. While the fruits are growing, you can increase its efficiency by applying a special substance (usually available from your local store) to the trees that attracts the bees. It is recommended to add this to the trees only after sundown, or in the early morning.
