One indication that the body is under attack is the onset of a sore throat. This situation usually precedes the onset of some forms of illnesses. Various illnesses are preceded by the sore throat. You may be feeling fine one minute and the next you are not.
Throat irritations can be caused by several things such as viral infections, bacterial infections, smoking, and reactions to medications. At the onset of a sore throat you scurry to find a remedy to rid yourself of the discomfort with which it comes. The cause of the problem will determine which method is best to use for treatment.
There are several home remedies which you can try to relieve the soreness of your throat. Some of the sore throat coures that are readily available in your home include: the regular table salt and water used for gargling, garlic that you can crush and mix with honey and various herbal teas that you can drink to soothe the aching throat.
Other treatments include over the counter drugs such as pain killers, candies, sprays and inhalants. However, use caution when using some of the non prescribed items especially if you suffer from other illnesses which these over the counter drugs may negatively affect.
Antibiotics are not recommended for irritable throats as they do not speed up the healing process. In fact antibiotics will only help if the problem is caused by bacteria, as in the case of strep throat. If you experience symptoms such as: swollen throat and breathing problems, light-headedness, fainting, dehydration or heart palpitation, you should see your doctor immediately.
Most sore throat usually clears up by itself within a few days. However if your problem persists for more than 7 days you must see your doctor, get diagnose and start treatment. As in such a case your problem may because from a more serious illness than you think.
